Future development plans

Future development plans have been announced to integrate the Centre of Engineering Excellence (CEE) into the School of Engineering and Built Environment of Wolverhampton University.

The plan involves integrating the Centre with the Innovative Product Development Centre (IPDC) based in Telford.

The brand “Centre of Engineering Excellence” will be retained.

Alan Collins, Head of Innovation & External Funding at the University outlined proposals to businesses and partners at a special consultation meeting of the Engineering & Manufacturing Forum held at the CEE
He indicated that there were four main reasons for the integration:

The intention is to establish an Advisory Board with business representation, the Council, as well as other partners.

“This integration presents an exciting opportunity to build on the work of the CEE - as long as the new centre continues to deliver what businesses need”.

1. The University’s role is changing and becoming more business driven. Combining the IPDC and the CEE would help the university to be more responsive to business needs and be more outward looking. The services of the two centres are complementary with a ‘good fit’.

2. It would obviate some confusion in the marketplace as to the help available to engineering companies.

3. It would help in securing long-term sustainability for the enlarged centre, which would have access to new streams of funding available through the University.
The integration of the two centres in itself could immediately release significant new funding to benefit businesses in the Wolverhampton Telford Technology Corridor.

4. There is the proposal tie-in with government policy to promote collaboration between service providers.
The vision is to create a 'centre for the Black Country and Technology Corridor' that matches the clout of a Warwick Manufacturing Group or Technology Innovation Centre in Birmingham.
